How to Renew Your New York Notary Public License

Notary license renewal in New York has changed. In the past, this process was easily accomplished by mail. However, the state has altered the renewal procedures. Now, it must be done online  through the New York State Business Express Webpage. One would think this would make the renewal easier. And it may, once you establish your account and become familiar with navigating the Business Express Website. Initially, it may seem more cumbersome to you. But such is the modern world. Step-to-Step guide to Renew Your Notary Public License

1. Know your license expiration date. Should you fail to renew on time, you may be required to start from scratch and take the exam all over again.
2. Go to the Business Express web page mentioned above. Firstly, you must create an account. To do so, you will have to create a NY.Gov.ID. You will find this option available once you click the Login/Register option on the webpage. This will take you out of the Business Express site and send you to the NY.gov ID Business Account Self Registration page. Here you will create an account. Be sure to remember your username and password.
3. Once you create an account, return to the Business Express web page. After clicking the Login/Register button, select the box that says, “I have a NY.GOV ID.
4. Use your NY.Gov ID to log into the Business Express site. Bear in mind that Business Express will kick back your login if you used a password manager. You must enter your information manually.
5. Once you enter your information, and before continuing, you must complete your Oath of Office. You will then have to scan it because you will need to upload it with your renewal application.
6. Make sure to have your notary commission number and the commission expiration date available. You will need it to complete the registration.

Complete the Renewal Application

It is important to double-check your entries when you complete the registration process. Any errors will delay the processing of your application. Be sure to have your credit card ready because you must pay the $60.00 fee at the time of submission.

Remember while on the site to check and make sure your notary commission information is up-to-date. If you see a discrepancy this is a good time to provide the correct information.
