Dollar Bills

Think about it. At $2 for every signature, how on earth can a notary make money in New York State?

First, let me say that most notaries see their commission as an adjunct to other services they provide. For example, maybe you work in a bank, an insurance office, or real estate. To apply for a notary license as a sole career venture would not be a productive venture. In addition, the $2 fee is fixed by the state. Charging more than allowed by the state can result in disciplinary action against the offending notary. We do have a Blog Article that

Admittedly, notaries provide more services than simply verifying signatures. They may take oaths. A notary may witness the signing of powers of attorney. He or she may notarize depositions, and provide other services all in an effort to validate a person’s identity and verify their signature. By the way, we do have a blog article that addresses the more commonly notarized documents. Nonetheless, the fees these services generate are still considerably low.

Solution 1 – Become a Mobile Notary

As a mobile notary, the charges for document authentication do not change. However, a mobile notary can charge for expenses. The expenses you charge have no limit. This is the case for signature validation. Consequently, you can charge mileage for your car, parking fees, or any other fees you pay for servicing the client. These charges are often based on the notary’s discretion.

In addition, if you live in a densely populated area, you will have more client activity, which translates to more expenses you can charge for. Consider, there is a significant population that cannot simply go to the bank or local office store to get their documents notarized. This could be because they are unable to drive, or physically incapacitated. There are a host of reasons why one may need a mobile notarization. As such, this could open a whole new market for you.

There is a downside. New York is now allowing remote notarization. As such, mobile notaries will be facing a decline in demand as more people become licensed to serve as remote notaries. Currently, mobile notaries are still needed. But common sense tells us that in the coming years they may not be nearly as necessary.

Solution 2 – Remote Notarization

New York is now allowing Remote Notarization, which permits the notary to charge not simply $2 but $25. You can learn move by visiting New York’s Notary FAQ page. Being a licensed remote notary can certainly help boost your annual revenue. This can open the door to making a decent living. Think about it. 5 RON’s a day, for 5 days, can yield $625 per week. Double that number and you would bring in $1250 per week.

Also, you have the convenience of providing service right from your office desk. RON may become a significant part of the future as times move forward. Feel free to watch our YouTube video which explains Remote Notarization in more detail.
